Shortly afterward the price of gold skyrocketed, and many were melted for their metal. Production was small -- in some years fewer than 2,000 pieces -- and stopped altogether from 1804 to 1838. Already scarce, they practically disappeared in 1933, when the U.S. stopped issuing gold coinage and prohibited citizens from owning them.
